    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use my FTP account?
    UPLOADING WEBPAGES:

    1. Download WS_FTP LE. You are welcome to use any FTP program, this is the one we prefer. It is available FREE at http://www.download.com.

    2. Install and get WS_FTP LE up and running.

    3. Click on the button labled "NEW", to create your new login.

    4. Fill out the following fields:

    • Profile Name: This can be anything - it's just a label
    • Host Name/Address: your domain name.
    • Host type: automatic detect
    • User ID: Your username
    • Password: Your password - be sure to click "save password"
    • Account: leave blank
    • Click on "advanced" and make sure that PASSIVE MODE does NOT have a check mark by it.
    5. Click on the "Apply" button and then "Okay".

This should log you into your hosting account, so that you may upload your website files.

The files and folders in the list on the right side of WS_FTP are the files on the server. The files and folders in the list on the left side of WS_FTP are the files on your hard drive. To transfer files from one side to the other, double click on them.

Double click on the "data" directory on the right side of WS_FTP. This will open up that directory so that you may upload your website files to your hosting account.

    VERY IMPORTANT:

You MUST make sure that you name your main page "index" and have the .html, .shtml, .php, etc. extension. AND that it is uploaded to the data directory. If your website isn't working, when you check it via your browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.), chances are you have not done one or both of these two important steps.

If the server doesn't see an index file in your data directory - you will get a "Forbidden - you do not have permission" error message in your browser when you try to view your site.

    COMMON PROBLEMS:

    1. Your main page won't work. Upon further inspection, it is named "index.html.html" or "index.html.htm". Your main page must be named "index" and have the .html, .shtml, .php, etc. extension.

    2. None of your graphics are showing up. Upon further inspection, the link to your graphics (in your HTML code) looks something like this:

    Wrong way:

This is a link to your graphic. As you can see, the "c:\\" is telling the browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) that the graphic is located on someone's hard drive. The graphic SHOULD be uploaded to your hosting account and the link SHOULD be pointing to that location.

    Correct way:
